Giants Gaming opened up Saturday's European League of Legends Championship Series with a surprising upset win over Misfits Gaming.
Despite Misfits (7-9) holding a slight edge over Giants (7-9) in the standings prior to this match, Giants quite simply looked like the better team, systematically dismantling Misfits from start to finish. Meanwhile, Misfits looked nothing like the team that managed to take a win over the league-leading Fnatic (11-4) just a week ago.
Misfits had a bit of hope coming out the gate, as jungler Nubar "Maxlore" Sarafian's Zac caught Giants jungler Charly "Djoko" Guillard's Jarvan IV for an early first blood. That was but a fleeting moment, however, as Giants immediately bounced back with plenty of damage from its team composition that was ready and willing to fight at any moment. Starting at the 17-minute mark, Giants did just that.
Despite only having a single kill to its name at 17 minutes, Giants found a 3-for-0 teamfight that kicked off a blistering performance in the final 15 minutes of the game. In that final stretch, Giants secured 12 kills to the two of Misfits, while also razing 10 towers, three inhibitors, and a Baron. Whereas Giants was moving as a cohesive five-man unit to run roughshod over the competition, Misfits looked like a disjointed solo queue team in the face of Giants' aggression.
Misfits will try and recover when it faces Team ROCCAT at 3 p.m. ET on Friday, while Giants will look to continue climbing the standings when it takes on Fnatic at 5 p.m. ET on Friday.
